THE BEST ICE CREAMS, A LUXURY
For a long time, good ice cream in Paris was only served in restaurants, patisseries or tea rooms. Wise flavors (vanilla, strawberry, chocolate…), classic presentation and bourgeois prices. As for the common people, they didn’t experience Italy’s “Dolce Vita” with competitive gelaterias, and had to make do with the low-end industrial products touted in the movies: Miko, Gervais, Eskimo and lemon frosted ice creams…
The only exception to the rule was the Berthillon ice cream parlour on the Ile Saint-Louis (see below), an artisanal institution since 1954 that supplies restaurants and sells takeaways. Phew!
The 90s revolution
It wasn’t until the 1990s and the arrival of the Americans Häagen-Dazs and Ben & Jerry’s that quality (albeit industrial!) ice cream was finally democratized: exotic flavors (macadamia nuts, dulce de leche, cookie dough etc.), stores open late into the night, the possibility of buying ice cream by the liter…
The stars were aligned for the arrival of numerous ice cream shops, both local and foreign (mainly Italian and Lebanese), in a single Parisian district: the Marais!

UNE GLACE A PARIS
This is the story of a “meilleur ouvrier de France” ice cream maker who joins forces with a world champion pastry chef. Nothing less! Everything, of course, is excellent. Don’t miss my favorite “orange-carrot-ginger” flavor. Their frozen pastries are true works of art. Takeaway only.

REŸS – Glaces Eternelles
Each flavor is a journey in its own right: “Balade à Bangkok” (jasmine-scented Thai rice ice cream), “Retour de plage” (pine nut milk ice cream, infusion of pine buds and needles, ylang-ylang and sea salt), “Kiss of the dragon”, “Dieux d’Amazonie”…
Definitely my favorite. Takeaway and small terrace in summer for on-site consumption.

BERTHILLON
Certainly the most famous of Parisian ice cream parlors, known for its high-quality artisanal ice creams and sorbets, made on the premises from natural ingredients. In season, marrons glacés and frosted mandarins are also well worth a visit. Berthillon symbolizes the excellence of French craftsmanship. Tearoom and takeaway. Please note: the shop closes every year… in August!

GROM
It would be unfair not to mention Grom’s ice creams among the best in Paris. When they arrived in Paris in 2008, the Italians at Grom were small ice cream makers striving to produce the best ice cream possible, using high-quality, natural ingredients and no additives. Since then, they’ve opened 80 stores worldwide and been sold to Unilever. Worth a try!
